What happens to your tip

Your tip moves through five stages: sent, sealed, opened by your program, worked, and closed with an outcome. Each one is described below, in order.

The five stages

  1. Sent. You finish the form and send it. That starts your tip’s trip to your program.
  2. Sealed. Once you send it, your tip is sealed. It travels to your program that way.
  3. Opened by your program. Your program opens your tip to start working it. Opening it is never quiet: the system permanently records who opened it, when, and why. There is no way to open a tip, or a batch of tips, without leaving that record.
  4. Worked. Your program reviews what you sent and follows up on what can be checked. Sometimes a different program is the one that can act on it. If so, yours may send your tip there. It stays protected the same way.
  5. Outcome. When your program finishes working the tip, they close it. If your tip leads to an arrest, you may get a cash reward.

Use your tip code any time to see where your tip is. Its status shows as one of: Received, Routed for review, Under review, Actionable, or Closed.
