If you lose your code or passphrase
If you lose your tip code or your passphrase, there is no reset. What you can still do depends on which one you lost.
If you lose your tip code
Section titled “If you lose your tip code”Your tip code is the only way back into your tip. Nobody, including your program and TypVault, holds a copy of it or a way to look it up. If it’s gone, there’s no way back into that tip. Any messages tied to it, and any way to check its status, are gone with it.
This is what keeps your tip anonymous. To recover a lost code, someone would have to link your identity to your tip in the first place. TypVault is built so that link never exists. Nothing connects a person to a tip, so there is nothing to look up.
If you lose your passphrase
Section titled “If you lose your passphrase”A passphrase is a second lock, on top of your tip code. If you set one and then lose it, your tip code still works, but only partway.
- Your tip code alone still shows status. You can check whether your tip has been received, is under review, or has been closed. Any approved reward still shows. Seeing it isn’t the same as collecting it: choosing how to receive the reward, and completing it, both still need the passphrase.
- The passphrase is what unlocks your messages. Without it, what you wrote and any messages with your program stay locked. Nobody can open them without the passphrase: not your program, not TypVault.
There’s a control for this on the screen where you enter your tip code: a link for when you don’t have your passphrase. It takes you straight to the status-only view instead of asking you to keep trying.
Why there’s no reset
Section titled “Why there’s no reset”A password reset usually works because the account owner can prove who they are. TypVault doesn’t have that identity to check against. Your passphrase locks your tip using only what you type, and nothing about you or your device is stored alongside it. That means TypVault can’t verify who’s asking for a reset, and can’t unlock your tip on your behalf even if it could.
This is the same protection working, not a missing feature. If a passphrase could be reset, someone would need to confirm the reset request came from you. Proving that would mean holding some way to identify you, which is exactly what TypVault is built not to do.
What to do before this happens
Section titled “What to do before this happens”Save your tip code, and your passphrase if you set one, somewhere private as soon as you get them. A note on paper works. A saved note on your device works. Do it before you leave the confirmation screen. Treat your passphrase like a password to something you never want a stranger to open.
